Selenium in small amounts, such as through a multivitamin supplement, are generally regarded as safe and even beneficial to human nutrition. In large quantities, however, it is toxic to mamamalian bodies, though it is rare that any healthy adult receives more than their daily allotment of selenium.
Selelenium has been shown in several studies to prevent chemically induced carcinogens in rodent studies, though there have been confliciting studies in humans debating the efficacy of selenium supplements. Under the most recent study, sodium selenite has been shown as an antioxidant that can kill mesothelioma cells in cell cultures. Additionally, sodium selenite seems to avoid noticeably damaging healthy cells in the body; this is an enourmous step forward in the treatment, as most traditional cancer treatments, such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy, often damage health tissue and cells in the patient's body.
The ramifications of this study are profound; if there is a simple and effective way to address the chronic and deadly condition of mesothelioma cancer and asbestos exposure, it could save the lives of millions of people all over the world. According to reports, the chemical selenite triggered cell death in 15% of sarcomatoid (cancer) cells, compared to just 8% of epithelioid mesothelioma cells. Total cell death after 24 hours of treatment was about 25% in the epithelioid cells and 30% in the sarcomatoid cells. Granted, these results took place in a laboratory setting and actual treatment may be years away. Regardless, this breakthrough provides at least a small amount of hope to those experiencing mesothelioma.

The next test used to diagnose the condition is a Cytology test. This is done by taking out fluid in the Mesothelium lining. It is then analyze in a lab in an effort to determine if any malignant cells are present. This test is starting to be used less often by physicians. Why? It is notoriously inaccurate!
Now we start getting to the serious tests. The first is known as a needle biopsy. In this test, a needle will be inserted into what appears to be the area of concern. A small amount of material is then removed and sent to the lab for analysis. This is a direct test of the area in question and usually reveals conclusively what is going on. If the area in question is not readily available to a needle, the biopsy may be done as a full surgery where the area is opened up and a sample is taken.
One of the things people constantly complain about when it comes to cancer diagnosis is the lack of a definitive answer. Every test suggests something, but few definitely indicate anything. Cancerous cells, however, cannot expel the chemicals. A patient is given a dose and then the cells are exposed to a laser light. The chemicals kick out an active form of oxygen that destroys the cancerous cells. There is a downside, however. The patient becomes very light sensitive and often must stay out of the light for as long as six weeks.
Anti-angiogenesis treatment is another interesting area of treatment. It works by attacking the tumors created by Mesothelioma. It does this by eliminating the ability of the tumors to create blood vessels. Without such vessels, the tumors cannot get blood and cannot grow.
